By Matt Merrill • April 17th, 2013

Now that Spring is finally here, it is time to begin planning your lawn care for the upcoming warm weather in beautiful Northern Michigan. Here are a few tips that should be done to ensure a successful growing season in Leelanau County and Traverse City.

Spring Cleanup

Your lawn is probably not looking its best this time of the year, but there are some easy things that should be done to help it look better and prepare for summer.

  1. Pick up all of the stones, twigs, and miscellaneous debris that has accumulated in your lawn throughout the winter. This will eliminate many eyesores and leave your lawn looking clean and uniform. You may even need to pull out a broom to sweep out the little stones and dirt that may have piled up around your driveway from the endless snow removal efforts of the winter.
  2. Rake! This is a really important step because it helps your lawn in multiple ways. First, it removes all of the leaves and little debris that settled on your lawn late last fall and throughout the winter. Second, it helps remove all of the dead grassthat has accumulated. You need to be sure that you don’t just scratch the surface with a plastic rake. You want to rake deeply with a metal rake to pull up all of the compacted grass near the soil. This helps remove the layer of “thatch” and allow your lawn to breathe and grow properly.
  3. Aerate your lawn…or let Green Team do it for you! This relieves your soils compaction and allow your grass to “breathe”. It also helps the roots get more oxygen and water to keep it healthy and green all season lawn.
  4. Fix any snow plow damage that may have happened to your lawn this winter. This can be done by removing large clumps of grass/soil. Then fill in any holes with topsoil to make a level surface with the rest of your lawn. Lastly, spread quality grass seed over the fresh topsoil and make sure you keep this area moist.

This is where Green Team Lawn Care can help start your lawn on the right track for the season! Green Team provides a fertilization program that is customized to the climate of Traverse City and Leelanau County. The first fertilization application of the season is extremely important because it provides the necessary nutrients for your lawn to thrive.

The first application is also important because it includes crabgrass preventer. Generally, crabgrass is the clumpy, tall grass that seems to grow faster than the rest of your lawn. This happens because crabgrass is more adept at thriving when nutrients in the lawn are scarce. Crabgrass is also difficult to get rid of once it becomes established, so the best method of control is to stop it before it starts.
